Ric stumbled into the hazy dreamworld, the stench of blood filling his nostrils. Even though darkness surrounded him, he knew by the warmth, the thickness of the air, and the heady smell, exactly where he was. It seemed Stormwalker, or rather the Creator through Stormwalker’s voice, wanted to speak to him again.
Ric emerged from the tunnel into the unending storm, and hurried through the statues made from human remains towards the distant tower. A gnarled black claw against the lightning-streaked horizon, it seemed to beckon him across the blood-streaked sand.
Again Ric had to endure the wails of agony as he made his way up the tower’s grisly staircase towards the room at the top. The living doors swung inwards, allowing him to enter Stormwalker’s sanctum. The thought that this place existed inside his head made him tremble with disgust, but he had long ago resigned himself to the fact that he could not be rid of it. Stormwalker was a part of him now, an unwelcome, unwanted but now essential part of him.
Ric looked down past flickering torches, fed by human fat, to the throne where Stormwalker had waited for him last time. But the cushions made from human skin were empty; of Stormwalker there was no sign. Ric looked around at the pulsing walls, the endless rivers of blood draining into grates set into the floor, and the disembodied eyes, watching his every move. For the first time he noticed, off to the left hand side of the chamber, a large pool. But it didn’t contain water. As Ric walked towards it, he realised that it was full of blood, and other objects too gruesome to contemplate. But even now, the alien portion of his mind wanted him to step into the warm liquid and immerse himself in it. He could almost feel the velvety fluid against his skin, taste the hot metal on his tongue, experience the sensation-
“No!” Turning away and gritting his teeth, Ric shook his head to clear it of the unwanted desires. “Where are you, Stormwalker?” he shouted. “I didn’t come here to be bombarded by your disgusting fantasies!”
“Right here,” the evil wizard’s soft voice answered, and Ric spun back around to face the pool. Stormwalker’s head and shoulders had emerged from the blood, and it poured from him in rivers. “You should have guessed.”
Ric folded his arms. “Come out of there,” he growled. “I’m not talking to you while you’re swimming in that filth.”
“Why do you not join me?” Stormwalker asked, spreading his arms and lying back in the mess. “You will enjoy it.”
“No,” Ric snapped. “Besides, you didn’t bring me here simply to splash around in your Swimming Pool of Death!”
“No, but it would have made this encounter more fun.” Stormwalker headed for the edge of the pool, and pulled himself out, his body glistening with blood. He lifted his hands, spoke a few words, and the red liquid flowed from him, gathering on the floor and sliding back into the pit. Soon, he was perfectly clean.
